Protecting the West African Manatee: Where Biodiversity Anchors Infrastructure Integrity

A Collaborative Conservation Effort
In partnership with the Nigerian Conservation Foundation (NCF), GRIP is leading a landmark biodiversity initiative aimed at preserving one of West Africa’s most threatened species and the delicate aquatic ecosystems it inhabits.
Our Focus Areas:
-
Halting the poaching and slaughter of the endangered West African manatee
-
Protecting aquatic and riparian habitats in key water corridors across Nigeria and West Africa
-
Engaging local communities in climate-aware conservation, knowledge-sharing, and co-protection strategies
-
Promoting awareness and education through grassroots activations and digital campaigns
This initiative demonstrates our commitment to ensuring that large-scale infrastructure projects are not only low-carbon but also ecologically responsible.
Why the West African Manatee?
The manatee symbolizes more than biodiversity—it symbolizes balance. Often called the “guardian of the wetlands,” this gentle herbivore plays a vital role in aquatic ecosystem health. Its vulnerability speaks volumes about the impact of human activity on our shared environment.
By protecting the manatee, we protect:
Clean water sources
Indigenous flora and fauna
Livelihoods tied to sustainable fishing and agriculture
Natural climate buffers critical to West African resilience
Advancing the Global Agenda: Our SDG Alignment
This program reflects our belief that sustainable infrastructure must include the protection of natural ecosystems.
Through this effort, GRIP actively supports the following UN Sustainable Development Goals
Protecting biodiversity is not an option—it’s a responsibility. And the West African manatee is our call to action.
