Beyond Energy: Preserving Life Beneath the Surface

Protecting the Hooded Vulture: Safeguarding Africa’s Aerial Guardians

At Grid Resilient Infrastructure Projects PLC (GRIP), clean infrastructure is only truly sustainable when it preserves the natural world around it. As part of our flagship biodiversity strategy, we are proud to champion the protection of one of Africa’s most overlooked but ecologically vital species: the Hooded Vulture (Necrosyrtes monachus).

Critically endangered and essential to ecosystem health, this species plays a vital role in waste removal, disease prevention, and food web balance across West Africa. Through strategic conservation overlays across our solar corridors, GRIP is pioneering a model where large-scale renewable energy and species protection go hand in hand.

Dual Flagship Species Strategy

Together with our West African Manatee program, the Hooded Vulture protection initiative represents our dual commitment to aquatic and aerial biodiversity. These two emblematic species symbolize the balance between progress and preservation—a principle at the heart of GRIP’s ESG vision.

Visionary Goal

To make GRIP the first clean infrastructure platform in Africa where utility-scale energy development actively preserves one of the continent’s most threatened scavenger species.

By doing so, we are setting the standard for nature-positive infrastructure, unlocking new frontiers in biodiversity finance, and building a renewable future that works with nature—not against it.

Species Protection as Strategy: Economic & Environmental Value

Protecting vultures is not just an ecological imperative—it’s smart, forward-thinking infrastructure design.

Key Benefits:

  • 📈 Biodiversity Credit Generation: Through Verra- and IFC-aligned biodiversity standards

  • 💸 Access to ESG-Linked Finance: Aligns with SDG-positive and nature-based investment mandates

  • 📝 Permitting Advantage: Faster regulatory approval via TNFD-compliant project frameworks

  • 🦜 Eco-Tourism Potential: Opportunities for community-led avian conservation tourism and education

  • 🤝 Stakeholder Trust: Builds transparency and legitimacy with local communities and global partners

Why the Hooded Vulture Matters

The Hooded Vulture, once abundant across sub-Saharan Africa, is now critically endangered due to widespread poisoning, habitat destruction, and unchecked development. As nature’s cleanup crew, vultures provide a natural sanitation service that prevents the spread of zoonotic diseases and supports rural ecosystem health.

By protecting them, we’re not only saving a species—we’re preserving the integrity of entire ecological systems.

Strategic Conservation in GRIP’s Energy Corridors
Our solar and hybrid energy projects intersect with key vulture flyways, roosts, and breeding zones. Rather than viewing this as a challenge, GRIP sees it as a unique opportunity to design infrastructure that coexists with nature.

Through:

  • Designated Roost & Flyway Buffer Zones
  • Zero-Poisoning Pledge in Development Areas
  • Partnerships with Avian Conservation Experts
  • Habitat Mapping & Nesting Site Monitoring

Advancing the Global Agenda: Our SDG Alignment

This program reflects our belief that sustainable infrastructure must include the protection of natural ecosystems.
Through this effort, GRIP actively supports the following UN Sustainable Development Goals

Protecting biodiversity is not an option—it’s a responsibility. And the West African manatee is our call to action.
